Germantown Ave. Construction Update 10/5/07

Here is what to expect Germantown Avenue in the next week and beyond, along with a PA 309 update.

PARKING ON GERMANTOWN AVENUE: No parking signs will be removed where work is not being done. However, some tree work is still being done, and in those areas there will continue to be no parking signs. Please note that PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND IN THE EVENINGS.

WORK PLANNED FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 8th AND FOLLOWING: Crews will continue to work on the high pressure gas line will in the area of Mermaid Land and the railroad bridge over Germantown Avenue, including Saturday. There will be plates on the road to allow vehicles to cross. However, you can still expect some short delays in that area. Pedestrian access will be on the west side of Germantown Avenue. Crews are installing a pedestrian walkway on along the strip mall where TLA video is in Chestnut Hill.

Cresheim Valley Drive will be down to one lane alternating traffic as the gas main work is completed. This work will be done between 9 am and 3 pm to avoid rush hour traffic.

Soon -- likely next week -- crews will pave over the west side curb line where there are cobblestones to create a safer driving surface. Access to the Trolley Car Diner and New Covenant Campus will be maintained at all times. Expect lane shifts during this time.

IMPACT ON BUSINESSES AND THE SAVE THE AVENUE WEBSITE: As you can imagine, this construction is having a very negative effect on Germantown Avenue businesses. Please make a special effort to support our business district by patronizing businesses on or near the Avenue now and throughout the construction period. Visit the Save the Avenue website, www.savetheave.org, for updated information, including how you can support our merchants.

A WORD ABOUT THE TREES: The Fairmount Park Commission has been consulted about tree removal for this project. Unfortunately, quite a few trees have to be removed, including some older, larger specimens. According to Fairmount Park, most of these trees are at the end of their life. The construction contract specifies that trees be replaced on a ratio of 2 1/2 to one -- more than two trees will be planted for every one removed. The new trees will be 2-3 inch caliper and will be replaced, under contract, if they are not living up to a year after being planted.

PA 309 UPDATE: PA 309, the major north/south highway east of the seminary, continues under construction. There is good news - the Easton Road exit (Glenside/Mt. Airy) has reopened. Westbound Easton Road turns into Wadsworth at the city line (Cheltenham Ave.) and then Mt. Airy Avenue. For more information, see www.Ltsp.edu/germantownave,
