Germantown Ave. for the week of October 29

Work looks to become more serious and disruptive starting this week. Items most effecting LTSP are in bold.

PARKING ON GERMANTOWN AVENUE: Tree work will continue near the Seminary, and there will be no parking signs in the area between Allens Lane and Gowen Avenue. There are parking restrictions between Roumfort and McPherson -- see below. In addition, the work from Nippon to Allens Lane (described below) will include no parking signs in that area for night-time parking. Please read specific no parking signs for detailed information about when those restrictions go into effect.

WORK PLANNED FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 29TH AND FOLLOWING:

Crews will continue work on the high pressure gas main from the SEPTA turnaround at Cresheim Valley Drive to the Trolley Car Diner;
Installation of low pressure gas line from Winston Road to Mermaid Lane, with lane shifts at intersections;
Installation of iron water main from Roumfort Road to McPherson Street, with east lane shoulder closure;
Tree trimming at Lutheran Seminary -- parking restrictions in effect;
Beginning Wednesday, October 31st, iron water main installation at night from Nippon Street to Allens Lane on the west side of the street -- parking restrictions in effect.

The paving over of the west side curb line near the Trolley Car Diner and New Covenant Campus has been postponed up to now, but will be done at some point in the next two weeks. After that, a traffic barrier will be added, segmenting two traffic lanes on the west side of Germantown Avenue. Work will be continuous on the east side. As of January 15, 2008, sections of Germantown Avenue will be closed completely.

Germantown Ave. the week of Oct. 22

Germantown Avenue construction this week mostly effects the area north of Gowen Avenue
and the LTSP campus.

PARKING ON GERMANTOWN AVENUE: Tree work will continue into the week, so there will still be no parking signs. However, the contractors have promised to pull as many no parking signs as possible. Please note that except in areas with weekend construction activity, PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND IN THE EVENINGS. Please read specific no parking signs for detailed information.

WORK PLANNED FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 22nd AND FOLLOWING: Crews will continue to work on the high pressure gas line in the area of Mermaid Land and the railroad bridge over Germantown Avenue. There will be work Saturday and Sunday. There will be flagging and lane closures. It is now doubtful that this work will be completed before October 22nd, as originally planned and as reported last week. However, this work cannot continue when the cold weather starts, so crews are working to complete it as soon as possible.

Tree work will continue throughout the week. This will involve temporary lane closures.

The paving over of the west side curb line near the Trolley Car Diner and New Covenant Campus will now be done after the gas main work is completed. Entrances to the Diner and New Covenant will remain open at all times.

Right now, there is video inspection of the sanitary line being done between Gowen Avenue and the Trolley Car Diner. The truck is parked outside Cresheim Cottage Cafe. Note that the Cafe is also open for business throughout this period.

Toward the end of the week, there might be water line installation between Roumfort Road to Gowen Avenue, on the east side, with a resulting east curbline closure. Expect some rerouting of traffic if this happens. Otherwise, this work will take place the following week.

IMPACT ON BUSINESSES AND THE SAVE THE AVENUE WEBSITE: As you can imagine, this construction is having, and will continue to have, a negative effect on Germantown Avenue businesses. Please make a special effort to support our business district by patronizing businesses on or near the Avenue now and throughout the construction period. Avenue Construction Update for the week of October 15

PARKING ON GERMANTOWN AVENUE: Tree work will continue into next week, so there will still be no parking signs. Please note that PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND IN THE EVENINGS.

WORK PLANNED FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 15th AND FOLLOWING: Crews will continue to work on the high pressure gas line in the area of Mermaid Land and the railroad bridge over Germantown Avenue, although there will be no work tomorrow, Saturday. There will be flagging and lane closures. This work will be completed before October 22nd.

Likely on Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be work done across the intersection at Cresheim Valley Drive. This work will be done between 9 am and 3 pm to avoid rush hour traffic. Again, lane closures and flagging.

As noted above, tree work will continue, beginning at the New Covenant Campus and moving south. The crews will work down the west side of the Avenue and then back up the east side, removing trunks and stumps. Soon -- likely next week -- crews will pave over the west side curb line where there are cobblestones to create a safer driving surface: this will follow the tree work. Access to the Trolley Car Diner and New Covenant Campus will be maintained at all times. Expect lane shifts.

There will also be video inspections between Gowen Avenue and the Trolley Car Diner. Finally, there will be saw cutting for water main repair in the vicinity of McPherson Street. Again, expect some rerouting of traffic.

IMPACT ON BUSINESSES AND THE SAVE THE AVENUE WEBSITE: As you can imagine, this construction is having a very negative effect on Germantown Avenue businesses. Please make a special effort to support our business district by patronizing businesses on or near the Avenue now and throughout the construction period. Germantown Ave. Construction Update 10/5/07

Here is what to expect Germantown Avenue in the next week and beyond, along with a PA 309 update.

PARKING ON GERMANTOWN AVENUE: No parking signs will be removed where work is not being done. However, some tree work is still being done, and in those areas there will continue to be no parking signs. Please note that PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND IN THE EVENINGS.

WORK PLANNED FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 8th AND FOLLOWING: Crews will continue to work on the high pressure gas line will in the area of Mermaid Land and the railroad bridge over Germantown Avenue, including Saturday. There will be plates on the road to allow vehicles to cross. However, you can still expect some short delays in that area. Pedestrian access will be on the west side of Germantown Avenue. Crews are installing a pedestrian walkway on along the strip mall where TLA video is in Chestnut Hill.

Cresheim Valley Drive will be down to one lane alternating traffic as the gas main work is completed. This work will be done between 9 am and 3 pm to avoid rush hour traffic.

Soon -- likely next week -- crews will pave over the west side curb line where there are cobblestones to create a safer driving surface. Access to the Trolley Car Diner and New Covenant Campus will be maintained at all times. Expect lane shifts during this time.

Visit the Save the Avenue website, www.savetheave.org, for updated information, including how you can support our merchants.

A WORD ABOUT THE TREES: The Fairmount Park Commission has been consulted about tree removal for this project. Unfortunately, quite a few trees have to be removed, including some older, larger specimens. According to Fairmount Park, most of these trees are at the end of their life. The construction contract specifies that trees be replaced on a ratio of 2 1/2 to one -- more than two trees will be planted for every one removed. The new trees will be 2-3 inch caliper and will be replaced, under contract, if they are not living up to a year after being planted.

PA 309 UPDATE: PA 309, the major north/south highway east of the seminary, continues under construction. There is good news - the Easton Road exit (Glenside/Mt. Airy) has reopened. Westbound Easton Road turns into Wadsworth at the city line (Cheltenham Ave.) and then Mt. Airy Avenue. For more information, see www.Ltsp.edu/germantownave,
